Hephzibah Church was organized in 1858, and among its first members were John Barron, Mary Stanley, William Stanley and Thomas Barron. In 1862 Br. Wm. Stanley "was employed to keep the house the ensuing year for the sum of $8.0O.

HEPHZIBAH BAPTIST CHURCH, Pike County, AL.
Located 4 1/2 miles south of Troy on the old Three Notch Road. Church was organized 10 April 1858.

Records in the National Archives show that he entered the Army on February 12, 1863 at Greenville, Alabama, as a private in Co. A, 54 Reg't Alabama Infantry. This company subsequently became Co. William enlisted as a private in Company A, 54th Regiment, Alabama 54th Regiment subsequently (in March 1863) became the 57th Regiment. This regiment was stationed at Mobile and Pollard until January 1864, when it moved to Demopolis and joined the Army of the Tennessee and participated in the Dalton-Atlanta Campaign. - [S65] The Stanley Letters, (Pike County Historical, Genealogical & Preservation Society), 50 (Reliability: 3), 30.
