- Letter of Mary Martin Dingler to Ray Martin 1974 - Email exchange with V. Kruschwitz, Aug 2001:
Here are a few notes I took on the Martin and Haygood families (remember Mary Alice Martin married James Haygood) from Mt. Sylvan's minutes:
During the revival meeting in July 1890, Jodie and Rosie Martin and M. A. Haygood were received by letter. Z. M. Martin was received by voucher. Nora and Monroe Martin were received by baptism.
In the August 1890 minutes:
"4. By motion a letter was read from Bro. W. J. Mosley of Covington Co. Ala. in behalf of Bro. Z. M. Martin, stating that the church to which he formerly belonged had been lettered out and moved of (sic) and that there was no chance to hold any conference to grant him a letter asking the church at this place to receive Bro. Martin by recomendation (sic) or by voucher.
5. Bro. Martin was received as an active deacon."
In the September 1890 minutes:
A. M. Martin was appointed a messenger to the association. (I have a transcription of the minutes, not the originals. It should definitely be Z.
M. Martin).
February 1891
Letter granted to sister Haygood.
(In the membership listing started about 1886 there is a Sister Haygood L., R. (Letter, Restored) and a J. Haygood (no abbreviation). M. A. Haygood joined in July 1890. I don't see J. Haygood joining. There are two other membership listings, one at the end of minute book one in 1905, which lists J A, Allie, Mamie, Gussie and Fletcher Haygood as members. The listing at the beginning of the new book lists:
J. A. Haygood, received by letter, dismissed July 11, 1908
Allie Haygood, received by letter, dismissed July 11, 1908
Flectecher (sic) Haygood, received by ex. July 1902, dismissed July 11, 1908
Alford Haygood, received by ex. Aug. 1903, dismissed July 11, 1908)
March 1891
"2. Bro. J. M. Martin made acknowlegements (sic) to the church." (This may be Z. M. Martin. I see no J. M. Martin in the membership listing, but it is not very organized.)
August 1891
"1. A committee of five was appointed Brethren J. M. Martin, Henry Wilbanks, Billie Barron, A. V. Hitt, and John Pool to confer with Sister Minnie DeLay for her ungodly walk as a christian."
September 1891
Bro. Martin chosen Mod. Pro.
January 1892
During the revival meeting Nannie Martin was received by baptism.
March 1892
Letter granted to sister Sallie Martin. (This must be Zachariah's second wife. He died in January. I don' t see where she joined the church. In the circa 1886 membership listing (added to for a number of years thereafter), there is no Sallie or Sarah Martin, but there is a Mrs. Y. M. Martin (sic).)
August 1893
During the revival meeting Andrew Martin was received by experience.
March 1895
Letters granted to Monroe, Andrew, Jodie, Nora and Nannie Martin.
July 1902
During the revival meeting Fletcher Haygood was receive by baptism.
September 1903
During the revival meeting Alford Haygood was received by experience.
July 1908
J. A. Haygood and family called for letters.

55. SARAH LUCINDA(5) STANLEY (Mary Sarah(4) Barron, Joseph(3) Barron, William(2) Barron, Wiliam(1) Barron) was born on 13 Oct 1844 in Troup County, GA. She died on 01 Feb 1890 in Smith County, TX. She married Zachariah Monroe Martin, son of Asbury Martin and Alice Hedgepeth on 31 Aug 1865 in Pike Co. AL. He was born on 01 May 1845 in AL. He died on 25 Jan 1892 in Smith County, TX.
Notes for Sarah Lucinda Stanley:
Family Bible: "died February 1, 1890, at 2 o'clock in the daytime." Sarah died of measles.
Notes for Zachariah Monroe Martin:
Zachariah served in the Confederacy as a Sgt. in Co. H 18th AL. He also served as the Justice of the Peace, Precinct #4 Covington Co. Alabama. He was adopted and raised by a good family. He had one brother, but they were not raised by the same family. The brother came to Texas, and visited with Andrew Martin and other children of Zachariah. His name was Henry Martin Hobby.
Zachariah and his family moved from Covington Co. Alabama to Texas in 1889 and settled in Mount Sylvan, Smith Co. TX. On 1 Feb 1890 Sarah died, six weeks after coming to Texas. Zachariah then returned to Alabama and married Sarah Price. They returned to Texas. He died in 1892 and was buried next to his first wife. Sallie went back to Alabama with their baby. She later returned to Texas and married a widower, W. P. Head, who had several children.
