HARRIETTE DOROTHY HAGEDORN MARTIN
EDINBURG - Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Harriette Dorothy Hagedorn Martin peacefully passed to her eternal reward in the company of family members at her home in Edinburg on December 16, 2006. She was born in East Lansing, Michigan on September 18, 1917 to Frederick and Blanche Hagedorn.
In 1930 her family moved to Edinburg where she helped with the family business, Golden Jersey Creamery. After graduating from Edinburg High School in 1935, she continued her education and graduated from Edinburg Junior College and Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio in 1939.
Harriette married the "love of her life" Al Martin in 1942 and began her long career as a homemaker and mother of two daughters and seven sons. Throughout her life, she was dedicated to her church, St. Joseph?s in Edinburg, where she served as a lector, choir director, altar society president and member. In addition, Harriette visited the sick and took the Holy Eucharist to many disabled parishioners. She actively supported St. Joseph School by serving as president of the St. Joseph School Mothers Club. Memom, as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, was known as the "Hamburger Lady" for serving her homemade burgers to the children of St. Joseph School for over 30 years.
Harriette served as president of the Edinburg General Hospital Auxiliary and as an Adult Leader for the Edinburg 4-H Club. In 1982 the community of Edinburg honored her as the Daily Review?s "Woman of the Year."
Harriette?s life was centered on serving God through her fervent devotion to her Catholic faith. She greatly loved our Blessed Mother and prayed to her often in her daily recitation of the Holy Rosary. Most importantly, to all who knew her, she was a rare example of a truly "Godly" wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Harriette was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Fritz Hagedorn. She is survived by Alfred Andrew Martin, her husband of 64 years; a sister, Mary Lou Krenek of Corpus Christi; and nine children: Alfred Martin of Bryan; Michael (Linda) Martin of Bryan; Steven (Donna) Martin of Joshua; Meladee (Joel) Reitz of Portland, Oregon; Douglas (Mary Alice) Martin of Edinburg; Theresa (Joel) Whitfield of Kerrville; Randall (Nancy) Martin of Arlington; Mark Martin of Tyler; and Christopher (Wendy) Martin of Long Beach, California. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 pm with a holy rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 215 North 16th in Edinburg today, December 19 (because of the ongoing restoration of St. Joseph?s Church). There will also be a visitation at the Skinner-Silva Funeral Home on West Samano in Edinburg from 8 to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20th. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 20th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Harriette Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Joseph?s Catholic School, 119 West Fay, Edinburg, Texas, 78539.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Skinner Silva Funeral Home of Edinburg.
