II .1.D.A.4 Asbury Martin (1809 SC-1851 Montgomery, AL)

Parents: John Martin, Jr and Abigail Freeman

Asbury was the first of his family to move westward into Alabama in the 1830s. He chose to settle around Montgomery prior to it becoming the state capital. ...

Asbury Martin was married two times having children by his second wife only. First spouse was Elizabeth Johnston (b. 1790 Montgomery, AL) and they were wed on 17 January 1832. His second spouse was Alice Hedgepath (1820 Robeson County, NC-20 August 1849 Montgomery, AL). They were wed on 28 September 1841 in Montgomery and had two children: Zachariah M. (1 May 1845 Montgomery, AL-25 Jan 1892 Smith County, TX) and Henry "Hobbie" (13 January 1849 Montgomery, AL-24 October 1906 Motgomery, AL).

Asbury's wife, Alice, died eight months after the birth of Henry Martin in August 1849. Asbury died in 1851, leaving the children orphaned. A family friend, Rebecca Hobbie of Montgomery, took in Henry Martin and raised him. He later became Henry Martin Hobbie.

Asbury is mentioned in his mother's will of 1863 Since Asbury had died in 1851, it is assumed his mother must have written the will between 1843 and 1851 and never revised it.
