April 9, 1917 - Dec. 4, 2007
Alfred Andrew Martin, "Papa Tex", as he was affectionately known by his grandchildren, peacefully passed to his eternal reward, at home in the company of his family on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007. Al was born in Swan, Texas on April 9, 1917 to Alfred and Nellie Martin.
Al attended Texas A&M University for a short time, and then transferred to Texas A & I University in Kingsville graduating with a degree in Animal Husbandry. He worked his way through college milking cows. He then moved back home to help his father at his farm and received a call to teach Agriculture in Edinburg. It was here that Al met the "love of his life" Harriette Hagedorn. They were married April 1942. Al served in the U.S. Army during the war and retired as a captain in 1946. After working as the foreman at the J. Haley Ranch in Mathis, he returned to Edinburg to become the agricultural supervisor for the Veterans Admn and the State Board of Education for 14 counties. In 1955, Al purchased two feed stores in east Edinburg and established Martin Farm & Ranch Supply on East Harriman. All nine of his children worked at the business at one time or another and the business is currently operating on Monte Cristo Road.
Through his involvement in the area 4-H clubs, Al organized the Hidalgo County Quadrill Team, which was square dancing on horseback. He also spent 22 years as an approved quarter horse judge for the American Quarterhorse Association.
His civic accomplishments included serving as a Director of the RGV Livestock Show for over 50 years, a charter member of the Hidalgo County Sheriff Posse since 1957, a member of the Board of Regents of Pan American College, and he was a president of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce. Al was a long time member of the Edinburg Rotary Club, with 25 years of perfect attendance for which he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award.
In recognition of these civic accomplishments, he was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Walk of Fame in Hidalgo, Texas in 2006. Al was also the Grand Marshall of the Fiesta Hidalgo Parade in 1988.
Al's last year was filled with much spiritual love and prayers from his Pastor, Art Beckwith and his church the RGV Healing Room.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother, and his wife, Harriette.
He is survived by a niece, Marjorie Rose, two nephews, A.C. and E.B. Brooks, nine children, Alfred Martin of Bryan, Michael (Linda) Martin of Bryan, Steven (Donna) Martin of Joshua, Meladee (Joel) Reitz of Portland, Oregon, Douglas (Mary Alice) Martin of Edinburg, Theresa (Joel) Whitfield of Kerrville; Randall (Nancy) Martin of Arlington, Mark Martin of Tyler and Christopher (Wendy) Martin of Long Beach, California. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
