Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Ida A Bendele was born in 1905 in TX, USA (daughter of Louis Joseph Bendele, Sr and Ida Stein).

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Louis Joseph Bendele, Sr was born on 25 Aug 1870 in TX, USA (son of Joseph Bendele and Maria Brauch); died on 4 Apr 1947 in Bexar, TX, USA; was buried in Saint Louis Catholic Cemetery, Castroville, Medina, TX, USA.

    Notes:

There are 2 Louis Bendeles in the 1880 Census, one 9 and one 10. The census was taken in July, so this Joseph would have been 9 at the time since his birthday is not until Aug as proven by other sources.

    Name:
Bendele is often mis-transcribed as Bendell

Louis married Ida Stein on 22 Jan 1896 in St Louis Catholic Church, Castroville, Medina, TX, USA. Ida (daughter of Charles Stein and Catherina Kempf) was born on 18 Nov 1878 in TX, USA; died on 21 Jun 1941; was buried in Saint Louis Catholic Cemetery, Castroville, Medina, TX, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Ida grew up next door to the Bendele family. In the 1880 Census of Medina County, the Stein family was only 2 dwellings away from the Bendele family (and thus future husband Louis). In 1880 Ida was one year old and Louis Bendele was 10. They did not marry until 1898 when Ida was was 20.

    Children:
    1. Maggie Bendele was born in Nov 1896 in TX, USA.
    2. Oscar Louis Bendele was born on 2 Jun 1898 in TX, USA; died on 21 Apr 1949 in Bexar, TX, USA; was buried in Helotes Lutheran Cemetery, Helotes, Bexar, TX, USA.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Joseph Bendele was born on 4 Apr 1824 in Niederentzen, Haut Rhin, Alsace, France (son of Jean Jacques Bendele and Kathrenia Burger); died on 30 Nov 1893 in Castroville, Medina, TX, USA; was buried on 01 Dec 1893 in Saint Louis Catholic Cemetery, Castroville, Medina, TX, USA.

    Other Events:

    • Immigration: 1 Apr 1852, TX, USA
    • Naturalization: 21 May 1860

    Notes:

Margaret Simpson has already done quite a bit of work on the Bendeles and the the Alsacian families of early Medina county. I used the pages as reference to verify my work and conclusions.

    Joseph Bendele:
    http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~margaretsimpson/Alsatian/bendele_joseph.htm

    Joseph's Father Jacob: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~margaretsimpson/Alsatian/bendele_jean_jacques_sr.htm

Also found was that of Diann Tooley:
    Joseph Bendele: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=drtooley&id=I03358

An early assumption from the other pages I found was that Joseph was the son of Jean-Jacques Bendele, though I have no proof at this time!

    Notes:

1880 Census - Joseph and family show up in 2 different locations. Both family units contain parts of the entire family. It looks like there was a primary home in town and a separate farm outside of town (similar to how D'Hanis worked and was originally founded -- another Castro colony).

"I did find some information in the History of Medina County book on page 177 (Bendele family). It just lists Joseph Bendele's marriage to Maria Brauch with her birth and death dates as 1836 and 1928. The only other thing it says was that she was born in Ellingen, Prussia."

    Name:
Benderle? Several records in Medina county point to Jacob Benderle (jr and sr), but no other records show Benderle's immigrating or in census records. I suspect that this is a mis-transcribing of the handwritten deeds or mis-understanding of the accent of our Bendeles.

    Name:
Margaret Simpson indicated that some listings from the St Louis Church records had the Brauch surname listed as 'Braeueh' assuming that the old handwriting was difficult to translate.

    Buried:
Cannot find any Brauch or derivation buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery in Castroville (on Medina County's RootsWeb).

    From Margaret Simpson:

"The burials come from the St Louis Church records. Some are listed under the spelling of Brauch and some as Braeueh. I'm assuming that was caused by the difficulty of reading the old handwriting. The cemetery records are from a walk through of the cemetery, recording tombstones. There were many burials that never had stones or had them but they've since rotted or crumbled so this is not unusual."

Nicholas married Susanah Boss in 1815 in Prussia, Germany. Susanah was born in 1794 in Prussia, Germany. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    d. 15 Nov 1881, Medina County, Texas

There is a record in Medina County's RootsWeb Marriages that shows a Mary Magdalena Stein marrying Joseph Beck. After some research (Ancestry.com Texas marriages and the 1880 Census of Medina County), this is Linna Stein b. 1849 from the other Stein family that pops up in the 1860 Bexar county census headed by mother Mary from Nassau (Mabel 8, Kate 6, Mary 15).

I cannot find this Mary after the 1850 census. In the family's 1860 census, she is not there. So I am presuming that she passed away in between 1850 and 1860.

The headstone of a Magdalena Stein in the St. Louis Cemetery in Medina County indicates this lady died in 1881. I still have no proof that she lived past 1860.
